Ekadashi

Ekadashi is the eleventh day of each lunar fortnight, twice a month, and the most important recurring fast (vrat) for devotees of Vishnu. There are roughly twenty-four Ekadashis in a year, each with its own name and story.

Significance

Ekadashi is held to be the day the mind is most readily turned toward the divine; fasting from grains and beans on it is said to cleanse body and mind and draw Vishnu’s grace. Several Ekadashis, including Nirjala, Devshayani and Prabodhini, are festivals in their own right.

How Ekadashi is kept

Devotees abstain from rice, grains and beans (some keep a full or waterless fast), worship Vishnu, stay watchful, and break the fast the next morning (Dwadashi) within the prescribed window (parana).

How often does Ekadashi come?

Twice each lunar month, once in the bright fortnight (Shukla) and once in the dark (Krishna), about twenty-four times a year.

What is not eaten on Ekadashi?

Rice, wheat and other grains, and beans/lentils are avoided; many keep a stricter fruit-and-water or waterless fast.

What is parana?

The breaking of the fast on the next morning (Dwadashi), within a prescribed time window after sunrise.
