Ashadha Krishna Ekadashi (amanta: Jyeshtha)

Yogini Ekadashi

Yogini Ekadashi is the eleventh day of the dark fortnight of Ashadha: the last Ekadashi before Vishnu is said to lie down for his four-month sleep. Its story is the plainest in the cycle: a man who did not do his work.

Significance

Hemamali, the yaksha who gathered flowers for Kubera’s worship, let a day’s offering go undelivered and was cursed with leprosy and exile; the sage Markandeya sent him to this fast, and he was restored. It is remembered as the vrat of a duty neglected and then set right.

How Yogini Ekadashi is observed

Devotees fast from grains, bathe and worship Vishnu with flowers, the katha’s own offering, and break the fast on Dwadashi morning. Feeding others and the gift of water belong to the day.

FAQ

What is the story of Yogini Ekadashi?

Hemamali, who gathered flowers for Kubera’s worship, failed to deliver the day’s offering and was cursed with leprosy; the sage Markandeya prescribed this fast and he was healed.

Where does it sit in the Chaturmas cycle?

Immediately before it: Yogini is the last Ekadashi ahead of Devshayani, when Vishnu is said to begin his four-month sleep.

Why do some almanacs show a Vaishnava date a day later?

Vaishnava reckoning can carry the fast to the following day when the tithi and sunrise fall a certain way. Drik Panchang shows exactly that in 2026: the Smarta fast on 10 July, the Vaishnava one on 11 July. This page carries the Smarta day.
