Utpanna Ekadashi

Significance

The story is of the demon Mura, who could not be struck down while Vishnu slept, and of the shakti who arose from him and destroyed Mura. Vishnu then named her Ekadashi and gave her the eleventh tithi as her own. Because this is treated as the origin, tradition regards it as the day to take up the fast for the first time.

How Utpanna Ekadashi is observed

Devotees fast from grains and worship Vishnu and the goddess Ekadashi together; those keeping their first Ekadashi conventionally start here and carry it through the year. The fast is broken at the Dwadashi parana.
