Trayodashi (13th tithi), both pakshas

Pradosh Vrat

Also known as Pradosham

Pradosh Vrat is kept on the thirteenth tithi of each fortnight in honour of Shiva, worshipped in the Pradosh-kaal: the roughly ninety minutes around sunset. Its weekday lends it a special name (Som Pradosh on Monday, Shani Pradosh on Saturday, and so on).

Pradosh Vrat dates in 2026

Computed for Ujjain on the sunrise-prevailing tithi (the Smarta convention); a regional day can shift by one.

Significance

The twilight hour, when day meets night, is held to be when Shiva dances in bliss, making Pradosh-kaal especially potent for his worship. The vrat is sought for health, prosperity and the lifting of troubles.

How Pradosh Vrat is kept

Devotees fast through the day and worship Shiva in the evening twilight, bathing the lingam and offering bilva leaves, then break the fast after the Pradosh worship.
