Significance
The katha is of King Mahidhwaja, buried by his younger brother under a peepal tree and left a restless spirit, until a sage passing that way kept this vrat on his behalf and released him. It is one of the Ekadashis whose merit is traditionally turned toward the departed rather than kept.
How Apara Ekadashi is observed
Devotees fast from grains and keep the day for Vishnu, worshipped here as Trivikrama, of the three strides. Water, shade and fans are given away in the summer heat, and the fast is broken at the Dwadashi parana.
