Shravana Krishna Ekadashi (amanta: Ashadha)

Kamika Ekadashi

Kamika Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of the dark fortnight of Shravana: the first Ekadashi after Vishnu has lain down for Chaturmas. It is, above all, the Ekadashi of the tulsi leaf.

Significance

Told by Krishna to Yudhishthira, the day’s account sets a single tulsi leaf offered in devotion above the heaviest gifts of gold. The whole teaching of the vrat is how little it asks: a leaf, some water, and a lamp that is not allowed to go out.

How Kamika Ekadashi is observed

Devotees fast from grains, offer tulsi leaves and water to Vishnu, and keep a lamp burning before him through the night. The fast is broken at the Dwadashi parana.

FAQ

Why is tulsi central to Kamika Ekadashi?

The day’s telling holds a single tulsi leaf offered in devotion to be worth more than gifts of gold or gems.

When does Kamika Ekadashi fall?

In the purnimanta reckoning used here, it falls in the dark fortnight of Shravana. Amanta almanacs list the same day in Ashadha. It is the first Ekadashi of Chaturmas.

Why do some almanacs show a second, later date?

Vaishnava reckoning can move the fast a day past the Smarta one. Drik Panchang shows exactly that in 2027: Smarta on 29 July, Vaishnava (and Gauna) on 30 July. This page carries the Smarta day.
