Shravana Shukla Ekadashi
Shravana Putrada Ekadashi
Also known as Pavitropana Ekadashi · Pavitra Ekadashi
Shravana Putrada Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Shravana. It is one of the year’s two Putrada Ekadashis, kept by couples hoping for a child; its other name, Pavitropana, comes from the sacred cord offered to Vishnu on the day.

Significance
The katha is of Mahijit, king of Mahishmati, childless and troubled, whom the sage Lomasha sent to this vrat together with his people. The Pavitropana rite that shares the day is the tying of a pavitra, a cord woven of cotton or silk, on the image of Vishnu: a yearly renewal of the bond between worshipper and worshipped.
How Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is observed
Devotees fast from grains and worship Vishnu through the day. Where Pavitropana is kept, a pavitra is woven for the occasion, consecrated and offered on the image. The fast is broken on Dwadashi morning within the parana window.
FAQ
How many Putrada Ekadashis are there in a year?
Two: this one in bright Shravana, and Pausha Putrada Ekadashi in the bright fortnight of Pausha, in midwinter.
What is a pavitra?
A cord of cotton or silk woven for the occasion and offered on the image of Vishnu: the rite that gives the day its other name, Pavitropana.
Why do some almanacs show a second, Vaishnava date?
Vaishnava reckoning can place the fast a day after the Smarta one. Drik Panchang does so in 2026: Smarta on 23 August, Vaishnava on 24 August. This page carries the Smarta day.
