Significance

With the gods asleep, the calendar closes its auspicious season, and weddings, house-warmings and new ventures wait for Kartik. In Maharashtra the day is Ashadhi Ekadashi, when the warkari pilgrimage on foot from Alandi and Dehu reaches Vitthal at Pandharpur. It is one of the largest walking pilgrimages anywhere.

How Devshayani Ekadashi is observed

Devotees fast from grains and worship the reclining Vishnu; many take a Chaturmas resolve on this day, a food or a habit set aside for the four months. At Pandharpur the day ends the Wari, with kirtan and the darshan of Vitthal.
