Namkaran Muhurat — Auspicious Dates for a Naming Ceremony

Namkaran is the naming samskara, classically performed on the eleventh or twelfth day after birth, and in many families later than that. It is a gentle rite, and the timing rules reflect it: the tradition looks for soft, auspicious stars and a settled day rather than a powerful one. Give the finder the place and the window your family is considering.

Place and date are not personal data. We do not collect birth details for this finder because it ranks days using the panchang alone. Vivah (marriage) muhurat requires both partners’ charts and is therefore not offered here.

What the rules look for on a namkaran day

The Moon’s nakshatra is the first test, with gentle and auspicious stars preferred. The tithi, yoga and weekday then rank the qualifying days. Rikta tithis are penalised, while Amavasya and Bhadra are excluded. The finder ranks the ceremony date only. The child’s name syllable comes from the nakshatra occupied by the Moon at birth, which is a separate question covered by our nakshatra baby-name pages.

Personalised Muhurat Report

The finder ranks days that are generally auspicious. A Personalised Muhurat Report adds your birth chart and shows which of those days suit you best, as an electional astrologer would.

  • Every candidate date scored for your birth star (Tarabalam)
  • Moon position and mental clarity on each day (Chandrabalam)
  • Your active dasha lord and whether it favours this venture
  • Saturn (Shani) and Jupiter (Guru) transit backdrop
  • A clear, ordered shortlist with the astrologer’s reasoning

FAQ

When should Namkaran be performed?

The classical timing is the eleventh or twelfth day after birth. Many families hold it later, often within the first few months, to allow for the mother’s recovery and a family gathering. Either way, the day itself is chosen by the panchang.

Does the muhurat decide the baby’s name?

No. The ceremony’s date is what this page finds. The syllable a name traditionally starts from comes from the nakshatra pada the Moon occupied at the child’s birth, which is fixed and has nothing to do with when you hold the ceremony.

Which nakshatras are avoided for Namkaran?

The harsh and fierce stars are set aside. The finder’s gate is the classical preferred set for this rite, so anything unsuitable simply never appears in the results.

Can Namkaran be held during Bhadra?

No. Bhadra (the Vishti karana) is excluded outright from every result the finder returns, for Namkaran and every other category.
