Guru Pushya Yoga — Next Date & Timings
Guru Pushya — Thursday meeting the nakshatra Pushya — one of the year’s best buying days.
Guru Pushya Yoga, also called Gurupushyamrut, occurs when Guruvara (Thursday, Jupiter’s day) coincides with Pushya, the nakshatra known as the nourisher. Jupiter rules the weekday and is also the star’s deity, so the pairing is considered especially auspicious. It is commonly chosen for buying gold, opening an account or beginning a course of study.

Times are calculated for Ujjain, the traditional Indian reference. The lunar factors hold across India; only sunrise-based times vary by location.
Why this pairing matters
Pushya is widely considered the most auspicious of the 27 nakshatras. Its name means “to nourish”, its symbol is a cow’s udder, and its deity is Brihaspati, guru of the gods. Thursday is also ruled by Jupiter (Brihaspati). Classical tradition therefore treats their meeting as sufficient for most undertakings without further examination. Marriage is the stated exception, as Pushya is not considered favourable for weddings.
What it is used for
Guru Pushya is used for buying gold, silver, property or a vehicle; opening a shop, account or new venture; beginning study, learning a skill or taking initiation from a teacher; and starting anything expected to grow steadily. Many Indian jewellers and traders schedule major promotions around it. It is not used for marriage.
Why it is so rare
Pushya returns about every 27 days, slightly less than four weeks, so its weekday shifts backwards by roughly half a day on each cycle. It therefore meets Thursday in clusters, with a few occurrences several weeks apart followed by a gap of many months. A year commonly has three to five Guru Pushya periods, so the next one may be some time away.
How the window is worked out
Guru Pushya lasts only while Thursday and Pushya overlap. Since the Vedic day runs from sunrise to sunrise, Pushya beginning on Thursday evening creates a window from that moment until Friday sunrise. If Pushya is already active at Thursday sunrise, the window lasts from sunrise until the nakshatra ends. Both cases are calculated from the Moon’s actual position for the reference place shown.
FAQ
What is Guru Pushya Yoga?
It is the coincidence of Thursday — Guruvara, ruled by Jupiter — with Pushya nakshatra, whose presiding deity is also Jupiter. The doubled Jupiter influence makes it one of the most auspicious short windows in the calendar.
How many times does Guru Pushya Yoga occur in a year?
Usually three to five times, and typically in a cluster a few weeks apart followed by a long gap, because the 27-day nakshatra cycle drifts against the seven-day week.
What can be started in Guru Pushya Yoga?
Buying gold, property or a vehicle, opening an account or a business, beginning study or taking up a new skill — anything meant to grow and last. Marriage is the classical exception; Pushya is not used for weddings.
Is Guru Pushya the same as Ravi Pushya?
They are siblings. Guru Pushya is Pushya on a Thursday (Jupiter), Ravi Pushya is Pushya on a Sunday (the Sun). Both are highly regarded; Guru Pushya is the one most associated with money and learning.
