Yoga Today

The panchang’s Yoga, properly called Nitya Yoga, is the third limb of the day. It is calculated by adding the longitudes of the Sun and Moon and dividing the result into twenty-seven parts. Most are considered benign, while a smaller group is traditionally avoided for important work.

The nine inauspicious yogas

Nine of the twenty-seven yogas are treated with caution: Vishkambha, Atiganda, Shula, Ganda, Vyaghata, Vajra, Vyatipata, Parigha and Vaidhriti. Tradition recommends postponing important beginnings when one of these is active. The remaining eighteen range from neutral to favourable. Each type is marked in the table below.

Not the same as a chart yoga

Nitya Yoga describes the day, not your birth chart. Horoscope yogas such as Gajakesari and Raja yogas are planetary combinations fixed at birth. The two concepts share a name but are otherwise unrelated. Nitya Yoga changes as the Sun and Moon move.

FAQ

What is a Nitya Yoga?

It is the panchang’s third limb — the daily combination of the Sun and Moon’s longitudes, divided into 27 named parts.

How many yogas are there?

Twenty-seven, cycling through the lunar month as the Sun and Moon move apart.

Which yogas are inauspicious?

Nine: Vishkambha, Atiganda, Shula, Ganda, Vyaghata, Vajra, Vyatipata, Parigha and Vaidhriti.

Is this the same as a yoga in my birth chart?

No. The panchang’s Nitya Yoga is a property of the day; chart yogas like Gajakesari are planetary combinations fixed at your birth.
