Movable and fixed karanas
The seven movable (Chara) karanas are Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija and Vishti. They repeat eight times during the lunar month. The four fixed (Sthira) karanas are Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga and Kimstughna. Each occurs once, near the new moon. The table below lists all eleven.
Vishti — the Bhadra karana
Vishti, better known as Bhadra, is treated differently from the other karanas. Tradition avoids it for important beginnings and waits until it has passed. When Vishti occurs today, the live panel above shows its exact end time.
