The seven Choghadiyas
Each slot has one of seven names. Amrit (Moon), Shubh (Jupiter) and Labh (Mercury) are considered auspicious and are preferred for important beginnings. Char (Venus) is neutral but “movable”, so it is traditionally chosen for travel and other activities involving motion. Rog (Mars), Kaal (Saturn) and Udveg (Sun) are avoided for new ventures, though they do not affect work already in progress.
How Choghadiya is worked out
Daylight is divided into eight equal parts, and the night is divided in the same way. Each part lasts about an hour and a half, with its length changing by season. The weekday sets the first slot’s ruling planet, after which the seven planets follow a fixed order. This is why the same clock time can have a different Choghadiya on another day. The calculation uses the actual sunrise and sunset, so the times below apply to the place and date shown.
Choghadiya vs Rahu Kaal
The two tools serve different purposes. Choghadiya identifies favourable windows, while Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika identify periods to avoid. For an important start, choose an Amrit, Shubh or Labh Choghadiya that does not overlap Rahu Kaal.
