Gujarati Calendar — Kartak 2026
Gujarat’s panchang, read from Ahmedabad. The months close at the new moon, and the Gujarati year famously turns not at Chaitra but at Kartak — the morning after Diwali, when traders open a fresh ledger at Bestu Varas.
Kartak runs 10 Nov – 8 Dec 2026 — the amanta (new moon to new moon) month. Timings are computed for Ahmedabad; the tithi and the month hold across India. Ritu: Autumn.

FAQ
Which reckoning does the Gujarati calendar use?
Amanta — the lunar month runs new moon to new moon. The month changes on the Shukla Pratipada after each Amavasya, so a full moon falls in the middle of the month rather than at its end.
Why do Gujarati dates differ from a North Indian calendar?
Only during the dark fortnight. In Krishna paksha the purnimanta (North) name runs one month ahead of the amanta one, so the same tithi is printed under two different month names. The tithi, and therefore the festival, is the same day.
When does the Gujarati New Year fall?
At Bestu Varas, the Shukla Pratipada of Kartak — the day after Diwali. The lunar months themselves still run new moon to new moon; it is the year count that starts from Kartak.
Why is Ahmedabad used for the timings?
Sunrise, and every window measured from it, shifts with longitude. Reading the calendar from Ahmedabad keeps the day’s timings honest for Gujarat rather than borrowing Delhi’s.
