Malayalam Calendar — Dhanu 2028
Kerala’s solar calendar, read from Kochi on the Malabar coast. Its months are the Sun’s sidereal signs, and the Malabar rule gives the Sankranti day to the new month only when the ingress falls before aparahna — which is why a Malayalam month sometimes opens a day later than the Tamil one.
Dhanu runs 17 Dec 2027 – 14 Jan 2028 — a solar (Sankranti to Sankranti) month. Thiruvathira and the Dhanu utsavams. Timings are computed for Kochi; the tithi and the month hold across India. Ritu: Pre-winter.

Vrats & observances in Dhanu

FAQ
Is the Malayalam calendar solar?
Yes. Each month is one sidereal sign of the Sun — Medam through Meenam — beginning at a Sankramam rather than at a new or full moon. The tithi is still shown for each day, because vrats and festivals follow it.
What is the Malabar rule?
If the Sankramam falls before aparahna — roughly three-fifths of the way from sunrise to sunset — the month begins that day; otherwise the next. In 2026 the Makara Sankranti lands at mid-afternoon, so Makaram 1 falls on 15 January, a day after Tamil Thai 1.
Which month opens the Malayalam year?
Chingam, in mid-August — the month of Onam. Medam, in April, is the first sign of the zodiac but not the first month of the Kollam year.
Why is no Kollavarsham year number shown?
Because our engine does not compute it. Everything on this site is calculated, never copied, so the page shows the Vikrama and Shaka years it can derive and the month names and Gregorian dates and leaves out what it cannot prove.
