Follow the evidence
House lords and lordship
Trace a house through its sign lord to the ruler’s placement, then state what that link adds without turning it into a verdict.
What you'll learn
- Find the classical ruler of the sign in a chosen house
- Trace a house-to-lord-to-placement chain
- Separate the visible chain from its traditional and interpretive meaning
Start with an address, not a meaning.
In the chart below Leo rises. House 10 therefore contains Taurus (sign 2), the
Moon (Mo), and no Venus. Venus (Ve) is over in Pisces (sign 12), House 8,
beside Mercury (Me). Those are visible facts; no career story has been told.
Chart placements and drawing guide
Every drawing below represents the same Leo-lagna teaching chart. South Indian fixes the signs, North Indian fixes the houses, and East Indian uses a regional grid. Only the drawing convention changes; the placements do not.
- South Indian: Signs sit still. House 1 is whichever cell holds the rising sign — here Leo, the default drawing on Astroyana.
- North Indian: House 1 is the top-centre diamond and never moves. The signs rotate around that frame, counter-clockwise.
- East Indian: Another grid. Same twelve rooms, same lagna. Only the handwriting changes.
| Label | Body or point | Sign | House |
|---|---|---|---|
| Su | Sun | Aries (sign 1) | House 9 |
| Mo | Moon | Taurus (sign 2) | House 10 |
| Ma | Mars | Capricorn (sign 10) | House 6 |
| Me | Mercury | Pisces (sign 12) | House 8 |
| Ju | Jupiter | Cancer (sign 4) | House 12 |
| Ve | Venus | Pisces (sign 12) | House 8 |
| Sa | Saturn | Libra (sign 7) | House 3 |
| Ra | Rahu | Gemini (sign 3) | House 11 |
| Ke | Ketu | Sagittarius (sign 9) | House 5 |
| La | Lagna | Leo (sign 5) | House 1 |
We are using sidereal signs and whole-sign houses: the entire rising sign is House 1, and each following sign is the next house. Another house-boundary method can place a planet differently, so the method belongs beside the facts.
The planet that rules the sign in a house is that house's lord. Lordship creates a traceable link:
House → sign in that house → sign lord → the lord's house
For the seven classical grahas, the rulership table is compact:
| Signs | Lord | | --- | --- | | Aries, Scorpio | Mars | | Taurus, Libra | Venus | | Gemini, Virgo | Mercury | | Cancer | Moon | | Leo | Sun | | Sagittarius, Pisces | Jupiter | | Capricorn, Aquarius | Saturn |
This course uses that standard Parashari table. Some later schools assign additional roles to Rahu or Ketu; silently mixing those rules would make the reasoning impossible to audit.
Work the chain before the prose
The worked question is deliberately narrow: where does House 10 send us for more evidence about work and public action?
- Observe the house. House 10 is Taurus and contains the Moon.
- Find its lord. Taurus is ruled by Venus.
- Locate the lord. Venus is in Pisces, House 8, with Mercury.
- Only now interpret. Classical house language connects the 10th with action, role, and public standing; the 8th with shared matters, hidden processes, discontinuity, and investigation. A cautious first inference is: tenth-house matters are routed through an eighth-house setting, so work may involve handling complexity, change, or resources shared with others.
“May involve” is doing real work. Lordship links two houses inside a symbolic method; it does not name a job, promise status, or establish what a person must do. The Moon in House 10 and Venus's sign condition still have to be weighed.
Your turn: trace House 4
Write four items from the same chart before revealing the response:
House 4 → its sign → that sign's lord → the lord's house
The South Indian default is enough: House 1 begins in Leo, so House 4 is Scorpio. Do the trace on paper first.
Try it before you reveal it
What is the complete House 4 lordship chain, and what bounded link can it support?
Compare your attempt
Worked answer
House 4 → Scorpio → Mars → House 6 (Capricorn). A bounded sentence could begin: home and foundation themes are linked to the sixth-house field of service, maintenance, and problems that require effort. It cannot yet say whether that link feels easy, difficult, private, or public.
The common wrong answer is “House 4 → Cancer → Moon.” Cancer is the fourth sign of the zodiac, but this is a Leo-lagna chart and House 4 contains Scorpio, sign 8. Another common shortcut is to stop at “Mars rules House 4.” That names the landlord but never finds where the landlord is operating.
A likely mix-up
A house occupant is not automatically the lord of the sign on that house.
Try a fresh case
Trace House 7 to Saturn in House 3 and write one bounded link.
Transfer the move
Now trace House 7 without looking at the table above: on this chart it contains Aquarius; its lord Saturn is in Libra, House 3. Write one sentence that links partnership matters to effort, skills, or communication, and include “may” or “can” so the sentence stays an inference.
Keep four lines separate in your notes:
- Observation: the house, sign, lord, and the lord's location.
- Tradition: the source-attributed topics of those houses and grahas.
- Interpretation: the connection you form for the question at hand.
- Uncertainty: conditions and context not yet examined.
The next lesson adds the two relationships already visible around Venus: conjunction and graha drishti.
