Why Do Two Astrology Sites Show You Different Charts?

If two sites give you different charts from the same birth details, it is almost always one of four things: a different zodiac (tropical vs sidereal), a different ayanamsa, a different house system, or an unconverted birth time / time zone. Pin those four down and the two charts reconcile — neither is "broken."

The four reasons, in order of impact

1. Tropical vs sidereal zodiac (the big one)

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (anchored to the equinox); Vedic uses the sidereal zodiac (anchored to the fixed stars). They are about 24 degrees apart today — nearly a full 30° sign. This is why your Vedic Sun or Moon is often one sign earlier than your Western sun sign. It is not an error; it is two different reference frames.

2. The ayanamsa

Within sidereal astrology, the exact gap used (Lahiri, Raman, KP…) varies by about a degree. That rarely changes a sign but can move a nakshatra at its edge. We cover this in detail in which ayanamsa is correct.

3. The house system

Even with identical planet positions, sites differ on how they draw the houses. Vedic classically uses whole-sign houses (the whole rising sign is the 1st house) — the system Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra describes. Western tools often use Placidus; some Vedic tools use Sripati/Bhava-Chalit. The planets sit in the same zodiac degrees, but the house a planet falls into can change.

4. Birth time and time zone

A surprising number of mismatches are simply an unconverted time zone or a missed DST rule, or a rounded birth time. Because the ascendant moves about 1° every 4 minutes, even a small time error reshuffles the houses — see why your birth time matters.

How to tell which one it is

• If the two charts are about one sign apart across the board → tropical vs sidereal.
• If they are a fraction of a sign apart → different ayanamsa.
• If the planets agree but their house numbers differ → different house system.
• If everything is shifted unpredictably → a birth-time or time-zone difference.

Which chart is the "right" one?

Both can be internally correct — they answer different questions in different frames. For Vedic predictive work, use a consistently sidereal chart (Lahiri). For Western psychological astrology, a tropical chart is appropriate. Just do not mix them in one reading.

Why is my sun sign different in Vedic astrology?

Because of the ~24° sidereal/tropical gap. Roughly speaking, if you were born in the last ~24° of a Western sign, your Vedic Sun is the previous sign.

Does the house system change my career or marriage house?

It can. A planet can be in the same zodiac degree but fall in a different house under Placidus vs whole-sign, which changes which life area it is read against. This is why we state our house system explicitly.
