Kundli by Name vs Date of Birth: Which Is Accurate?

A real Vedic kundli needs your date, exact time, and place of birth — not your name. "Kundli by name" tools only guess your Moon sign from the first syllable of your name (the naam akshar), which reflects a naming custom, not your actual sky. For matching or predictions, always use date + time + place.

What "by name" actually does

Traditionally, a baby's name is chosen during namkaran so that its first syllable belongs to the pada (quarter) of the Moon's nakshatra at birth. Each of the 27 nakshatras is divided into 4 padas, giving 108 naming syllables. A "kundli by name" tool runs this backwards: it reads your first syllable and guesses which nakshatra-pada — and therefore which Moon sign — you might have.

That is a reasonable parlour trick, but it is a guess, for two reasons:

• Names are not always chosen by nakshatra. Plenty of people are named for family, deities, or fashion — not their birth star.
• Syllables overlap. A single starting sound can belong to more than one nakshatra/pada, so the mapping is not unique.

What a genuine chart needs

Your real kundli is built from three inputs:

• Date of birth — to place the slow planets.
• Exact time of birth — to fix the ascendant (lagna), which moves about 1° every 4 minutes and so anchors the entire house framework. (More in why your birth time matters.)
• Place of birth — to convert to the correct time zone and compute the horizon for your latitude/longitude.

From those, the engine computes the actual Moon nakshatra, the lagna, and every planet — none of which a name can supply. The method follows Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, which casts the chart from the moment and place of birth.

Why this matters most for kundli matching

Can I match a kundli without the birth time?

You can get a partial, Moon-sign-level match from date + place alone, because the Moon's nakshatra usually doesn't change within a day. But the ascendant, houses, and any time-sensitive dosha need the birth time to be reliable.

Is a name-based rashi ever right?

Often it is — if you were named by the traditional naam-akshar rule. But "often right" is not "verified," and you cannot tell from the name alone whether the rule was followed. Treat it as a hint, not a chart.

What if I don't know my exact birth time?

Use the most accurate time you have (a birth certificate or hospital record is best), and consider birth-time rectification for serious predictive work. A name will not substitute for it.
