Your Lagna, your Rashi, and your Sun sign are three different points answering three different questions — none of them "the" sign. In Vedic astrology the two that carry the most weight are the Lagna (your ascendant) and the Rashi (your Moon sign); the Sun sign you know from Western horoscopes is the least emphasised of the three.
The three signs, plainly
- Lagna (Ascendant) — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth, and your 1st house. It anchors the entire chart: your body, temperament, and the framework every other house is counted from. It changes about once every two hours, so it depends on your exact birth time.
- Rashi (Janma Rashi / Moon sign) — the sign your Moon occupies. It governs the mind and emotions, and it is the basis of your nakshatra, your Vimshottari dasha, and most daily/predictive Vedic work. When an Indian astrologer asks "what is your rashi?", this is what they mean.
- Sun sign — the sign the Sun occupies. Central to Western astrology; in Vedic it is one factor among many, not the headline.
Why "which is more important" is the wrong question
They are not competing — they answer different things:
- Read the Lagna for the structure of your life: which planet sits in which house, who rules what, your overall direction. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra builds the house framework from the Lagna.
- Read the Rashi (Moon) for your inner world and your timing — emotions, instincts, and the dasha periods that schedule your life's chapters. Vedic astrologers routinely read the chart from the Moon too (Chandra Lagna), not only from the ascendant.
A good reading uses both. Relying on just one — or on the Sun sign alone — is what makes generic horoscopes feel hit-or-miss.
Why your Vedic signs differ from your Western sign
Two reasons, both covered elsewhere: Vedic uses the sidereal zodiac (about 24° from Western tropical), and your Moon sign simply isn't your Sun sign. See why two sites show different charts. And because the Lagna moves so fast, it needs a precise birth time — see why birth time matters.
Find all three
Your Lagna and Rashi come from your date, exact time, and place of birth. The calculator below computes your rising sign (Lagna); pair it with your Moon sign for the two that matter most in Vedic astrology.
FAQ
Should I read horoscopes by my Lagna or my Rashi?
Traditionally by your Moon sign (Rashi) — that is what "rashifal" is keyed to — and, for more accuracy, by your Lagna as well. Reading by Sun sign (the Western default) is the weakest option in a Vedic frame.
Why is my Moon sign different from my Sun sign?
Because the Moon and Sun were in different signs at your birth — they move at very different speeds. Your "rashi" is the Moon's sign, which is often not the same as your familiar Sun sign.
Can my Lagna and Rashi be the same sign?
Yes — if the Moon happened to be in your rising sign at birth. It is perfectly normal, and it simply means your ascendant and Moon sign coincide.

Your ascendant changes roughly every two hours, and its degree moves quickly. Even a small error in birth time can change the houses, their rulers and the starting balance of your dasha.
