How to Read Your Vimshottari Dasha Sequence, Step by Step

  • antardasha

To read a Vimshottari dasha sequence, first identify the running Mahadasha and Antardasha. Then examine where both lords sit in the birth chart, which houses they rule, how they relate to each other, and what current transits activate. A planet is not “good” or “bad” by name alone; the natal chart determines what its period can deliver.

The nine-period sequence

Vimshottari is a 120-year cycle of nine planetary periods in a fixed order:

  1. Ketu: 7 years
  2. Venus: 20 years
  3. Sun: 6 years
  4. Moon: 10 years
  5. Mars: 7 years
  6. Rahu: 18 years
  7. Jupiter: 16 years
  8. Saturn: 19 years
  9. Mercury: 17 years

The lengths total 120. The cycle does not begin at Ketu for everyone: the Moon’s birth nakshatra determines the starting lord, and the portion of that nakshatra already travelled determines the balance remaining at birth. The method is set out in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra.

Step 1: find the current Mahadasha

The Mahadasha is the long chapter. Do not interpret it from a one-line planet keyword. Record:

  • the lord’s sign and house;
  • the houses it rules from your Lagna;
  • its dignity and conjunctions;
  • aspects to and from it; and
  • whether it is involved in a clear yoga.

For example, Rahu’s 18 years are not uniformly difficult. The result depends on Rahu’s placement, its dispositor, and the planets influencing it; see Is Rahu Mahadasha good or bad?.

Step 2: add the current Antardasha

Every Mahadasha contains nine Antardashas, producing 81 major/sub-period combinations across the complete cycle. The Mahadasha lord sets the broader field; the Antardasha lord narrows the active subject and timing.

Read the two lords together:

  • Are they friendly, neutral, or difficult by the method you use?
  • Do they connect through a conjunction, aspect, exchange, or shared house theme?
  • Which houses do both activate?
  • Does the sub-period repeat or contradict the Mahadasha promise?

The article Antardasha vs Mahadasha explains the hierarchy in more detail.

Step 3: identify the repeated life area

Look for repetition rather than isolated symbolism. If the Mahadasha lord rules the 10th, sits in the 2nd, and the Antardasha lord connects the 6th and 10th, work and income deserve attention. If only one weak factor points toward career while five others point elsewhere, do not force a career prediction.

Repeated house themes make a reading specific without making it deterministic. They describe the arena in which choices and circumstances are more likely to concentrate.

Step 4: use transits as triggers, not replacements

Transits can activate a dasha promise; they should not manufacture a promise that the birth chart and period lords do not support. Jupiter or Saturn crossing a relevant house may time a development, but the running period still describes why that development belongs to this chapter.

This keeps the order of reasoning clear: birth chart → Mahadasha → Antardasha → transit.

Step 5: keep dates proportional to birth-time certainty

The starting balance depends on the Moon’s exact position inside its nakshatra. If the recorded birth time is approximate and the Moon is near a nakshatra boundary, the starting lord or period dates can shift. Do not claim day-level precision from uncertain inputs; see why birth time matters.

The calculator below computes the timeline from your birth details and shows the sequence period by period. Use it to find the dates first, then interpret the two active lords through your own chart rather than reading a generic “planet dasha” forecast.

FAQ

Which dasha am I running now?

It depends on your Moon’s birth nakshatra and the elapsed portion at birth. A calculator needs your date, time, and place to derive the starting balance and current period.

Is Mahadasha more important than Antardasha?

It is broader, not sufficient by itself. The Mahadasha sets the chapter and the Antardasha specifies the active scene; both are always read together.

Does a Saturn or Rahu period mean bad luck?

No. The lord’s natal placement, house rulership, relationships, and dispositor determine the available results. A planet’s reputation is not a personal prediction.

What comes below Antardasha?

Pratyantardasha is the next subdivision, followed by finer levels. Use finer periods only when the birth time and the larger-period interpretation are reliable enough to support that precision.
