Antardasha vs Mahadasha: How to Read Your Dasha Sequence

A Mahadasha is a major planetary period; an antardasha is a sub-period inside it. The simplest way to hold it: the Mahadasha sets the theme of a chapter of your life, and the antardasha within it triggers the specific events. You are always running both at once — a Mahadasha lord and an antardasha lord — and you read them together.

The Vimshottari cycle

The Vimshottari dasha system spans a full 120 years, divided among the nine planets in a fixed order with fixed lengths: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 — which add up to 120. How antardashas divide a Mahadasha

Each Mahadasha is itself split into nine antardashas, one for every planet, running in the same Vimshottari order and proportional to each planet's own dasha length. So a long Mahadasha like Saturn's (19 years) opens with a Saturn-Saturn sub-period, then Saturn-Mercury, Saturn-Ketu, and so on — each lasting in proportion to the sub-lord's share of 120.

Reading the two together

• The Mahadasha lord is the backdrop — the overarching significations and the houses it rules and occupies.
• The antardasha lord is the active trigger — it activates its significations within that backdrop, and the relationship between the two lords (friends, enemies, their houses, mutual aspects) shapes whether the sub-period flows or grinds.
