Location and relationship
Houses and the four angles
Separate the twelve life-area houses from the zodiac signs, locate the ASC–DSC and MC–IC axes, and add one house to a placement.
What you'll learn
- Locate and define the ascendant, descendant, midheaven, and lower meridian
- Distinguish a house sector from the sign occupying it
- Add one house topic to a planet-in-sign statement
Four exact degrees give the wheel its local frame. In the synthetic chart they are:
| Angle | Position | Observable geometry | | --- | --- | --- | | ASC | 12° Libra | eastern ecliptic–horizon intersection | | DSC | 12° Aries | opposite western intersection | | MC | 15° Cancer | ecliptic–upper-meridian intersection | | IC | 15° Capricorn | opposite lower-meridian point |
The ASC–DSC line is the horizon axis. The MC–IC line is the meridian axis. These angles are calculated points, not planets, and they depend strongly on birth time and place.
Astroyana uses Placidus for its timed Western natal chart. In that quadrant system the ASC and DSC begin Houses 1 and 7, while the MC and IC begin Houses 10 and 4. Other systems divide the wheel differently. Whole-sign houses, for example, make the entire rising sign House 1, and the MC can fall inside rather than at the start of a whole-sign house.
Twelve areas, not twelve personality types
The inherited house topics are broad:
- self and approach
- possessions, resources, and values
- learning, messages, siblings, and nearby movement
- home, roots, and private foundations
- creativity, play, and children
- routines, work, service, and maintenance
- one-to-one partnership and open counterparts
- shared resources, obligations, loss, and change
- belief, higher learning, publishing, and long journeys
- public role, vocation, and accountability
- friends, groups, support, and hopes
- retreat, endings, seclusion, and what is hard to see
These are traditional interpretive domains. A placement in House 6 is not a medical diagnosis; one in House 8 does not predict loss; one in House 10 does not guarantee a particular career.
Add the house to the Moon
Our teaching Moon is 20° Taurus in House 8.
- Moon: habitual response and needs.
- Taurus: fixed earth, a steadying and consolidating style.
- House 8: the context of shared resources, obligations, and consequential change.
A careful synthesis is: The tradition may read habitual responses as seeking steadiness when shared obligations or changes have to be managed. It does not say what will happen, and it does not turn House 8 into “Scorpio energy.” Taurus is the sign; House 8 is the local sector.
Use these two facts from the sample: Sun at 18° Leo in House 10 and MC at 15° Cancer. Decide whether “Sun in House 10” also means “Sun conjunct MC.”
Try it before you reveal it
Is the teaching Sun conjunct the MC merely because both relate to House 10? Show the geometric reason.
Compare your attempt
Worked answer
No. The MC is 15° Cancer, or 105° of zodiacal longitude. The Sun is 18° Leo, or 138°. They are 33° apart, so the Sun is inside House 10 but not close to the MC. The common mix-up is to treat a whole house sector as if it were the exact angle that anchors it.
A likely mix-up
A planet anywhere in House 10 is conjunct the MC.
Try a fresh case
Keep the Sun at 18° Leo but move it to House 11; revise only the setting.
Transfer the location
Keep the Sun at 18° Leo but move it to House 11 in a second synthetic chart. Purpose and visibility still operate through fixed fire; the setting changes from public role and accountability to friends, groups, and collective aims. Changing one coordinate should change one part of the sentence, not replace the whole interpretation.
