Check condition

Condition and dignity without verdicts

Check exaltation, own-sign placement, or debilitation as one part of a graha’s condition without turning strength into good or bad fate.

What you'll learn

  • Recognise exalted, own-sign, and debilitated placements
  • Check dignity from the graha-rashi pair rather than the house number
  • Describe condition without making a moral or deterministic verdict

Three placements on the synthetic chart share a useful clue. Find Sa in sign 7, then find Me and Ve together in sign 12.

Dignity examples on the shared synthetic chart: Saturn is in Libra; Mercury and Venus are both in Pisces. The house locations are separate observations.
Chart placements and drawing guide

Every drawing below represents the same Leo-lagna teaching chart. South Indian fixes the signs, North Indian fixes the houses, and East Indian uses a regional grid. Only the drawing convention changes; the placements do not.

  • North Indian: House 1 is the top-centre diamond and never moves. The signs rotate around that frame, counter-clockwise.

The sign number alone is not the condition. Condition begins with a pair: which graha occupies which rashi?

  • Saturn + Libra is classed as exalted.
  • Mercury + Pisces is classed as debilitated.
  • Venus + Pisces is classed as exalted.

Mercury and Venus prove why “Pisces is strong” or “House 8 is weak” cannot be the rule. The same rashi and bhava can hold different conditions for different grahas.

The first-pass dignity map

Dignity is useful shorthand for a graha's sign-based condition, including exaltation, own-sign placement, and debilitation. It is not a score for the person's worth and not a promise of pleasant or unpleasant events.

For the seven visible grahas, the basic sign relationships are:

  • Sun: own sign Leo; exalted in Aries; debilitated in Libra.
  • Moon: own sign Cancer; exalted in Taurus; debilitated in Scorpio.
  • Mars: own signs Aries and Scorpio; exalted in Capricorn; debilitated in Cancer.
  • Mercury: own signs Gemini and Virgo; exalted in Virgo; debilitated in Pisces.
  • Jupiter: own signs Sagittarius and Pisces; exalted in Cancer; debilitated in Capricorn.
  • Venus: own signs Taurus and Libra; exalted in Pisces; debilitated in Virgo.
  • Saturn: own signs Capricorn and Aquarius; exalted in Libra; debilitated in Aries.

The classical texts also discuss moolatrikona, friendships, exact exaltation degrees, motion, combustion, aspects, divisional positions, and several kinds of strength. Rahu and Ketu are left out of this beginner table because authorities do not give one uniform sign-dignity scheme for the nodes.

A contrast that blocks the “good/bad” shortcut

Work only with the two grahas in Pisces, House 8:

  1. Observation: Me and Ve both occupy sign 12; whole-sign counting from Leo places both in House 8.
  2. Traditional classification: Mercury is debilitated in Pisces; Venus is exalted there.
  3. Bounded reading move: note that their sign-based conditions differ, then postpone judgement until their roles and relationships are examined.

“Venus is good and Mercury is bad” is not the result. Exaltation and debilitation are named strength categories, not guarantees of ease or failure. House lordship, conjunction, aspects, cancellation rules, divisional charts, timing, and the question being asked can all change the synthesis.

Classify one pair before revealing

Return to Sa. Name its rashi and house, then use the first-pass map to classify its dignity. Do not convert the classification into a life prediction.

Try it before you reveal it

What basic dignity does Saturn have in the synthetic chart, and what does that not prove?

Compare your attempt

Worked answer

Saturn is in Libra, sign 7, in House 3; Saturn is classically exalted in Libra. That does not prove easy communication, guaranteed courage, professional success, or any event. It records one named sign-based condition for the next interpretive step.

A likely mix-up

A named dignity is one chart factor, not a verdict about ease, success, or an event.

Try a fresh case

Classify the sample Sun from its sign, then state what remains unproven.

If you classified Saturn from “House 3,” you used the wrong label. Dignity is checked from Saturn + Libra; the house tells where its functions are being considered, not whether the graha is exalted.

For transfer, classify the Sun in the sample. Su occupies Aries, sign 1, in House 9, so the basic condition is exaltation. Write the four-part note “Sun—Aries—House 9—exalted” and stop before a verdict.
