How special is your “special” yoga?

Paid chart readings often present auspicious planetary combinations, or yogas, as rare or royal. We ran the yoga detector across 50,000 charts and counted each result. Famous yogas were more common than their reputation suggests, and most charts contained several. The presence of one yoga therefore says less than its strength and context.

Famous yogas appear in many charts

Gajakesari, Budha-Aditya and the generic Raja and Dhana yogas are the names you hear most and they show up in a large share of charts. That doesn’t make them meaningless; it means their presence is the beginning of the analysis, not the conclusion.

The five “great person” yogas

The Pancha Mahapurusha yogas form when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn is exalted or in its own sign in an angle. Each is individually uncommon, but with five chances, about a third of charts have at least one.

What this means

Most charts contain at least one yoga. What distinguishes one chart from another is the yoga’s strength: the dignity of its planets, the houses involved and whether its period occurs in the dasha timeline. A claim about a “rare yoga” should be checked against that full context.

FAQ

How common is the Gajakesari yoga?

Far more common than its reputation: it appeared in 33.4% of 50,000 charts. Gajakesari forms whenever the Moon and Jupiter sit in mutual angles, which happens often.

Does having a Raja yoga make me special?

Most charts have several yogas. The average is 6.7 different types, and 100% have at least one auspicious yoga. A yoga is a starting point rather than a guarantee; its strength and the rest of the chart decide what it delivers.

How rare are the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas?

A "great person" yoga (Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya or Sasa) appears in 34.6% of charts, about one in three. Each requires one of five planets to be exalted or in its own sign in an angle.
